A deeper look into national policies and trends in the countries that participate in the siLang consortium (Greece, Norway, Italy, Estonia and Portugal) reveals the fact that these vary dependent on different historical, cultural, geo-political backgrounds or financial factors. However, the significance of promoting foreign language learning is seen to be embraced by the governmental authorities of all five countries. Interestingly, the acquisition of foreign language skills is directly linked to better professional and personal life prospects and therefore is promoted at all levels of education. The following sections provide an extensive overview of the adopted policies, emerging problems and trends related to foreign language learning in general in Greece, Norway, Italy, Estonia and Portugal. Outcomes are based on field input gathered by the partners.
